Formatting Posts
« on: January 11, 2019, 12:33:56 PM »
There's a lot you can do in a post, from linking URLs to inserting images and attachments.  For the most part the interface works similar to a word processor, but we'll cover some of the more advanced features here.

Example of a post with advanced formatting, including post preview above:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The Editor

Posts are creating using the editor, which contains the form for entering the message as well as a selection of buttons and formatting tools.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Simply enter your message and click "Preview" at the bottom right to view a preview of your message as it will look in the forum when posted.  You can continue to edit your post and clicking preview to see your changes as you go along.

Advanced formatting is done by making use of Bulletin Board Codes or BBCodes.  BBCodes are a way to format posts in the forums and in many other places online.  More information on supported BBCodes can be found ON THE OFFICIAL SMF POST HERE.

Editor Buttons

Across the top of the message windows you will find the editor toolbar.

The Editor Toolbar:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Many of these icons will be familiar if you've ever used a word processor.  The first row included buttons to modify text formatting, including (in order form left to right): Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Preformatted Text, Left Align, Center Align, Right Align, Font Face, Font Size, and Font Color.

To apply any of these text formats simply write your text, select it, and then click the button.  This will automatically wrap your text in the correct BBCODE tags to format the text.  You can preview the effects by clicking the "Preview" button on the bottom-right of the editor window.

The second row contains additional tools for inserting media.  These include (in order form left to right): Off-site image linking, URL linking, Email address linking, and FTP URL linking.  Also included are text effects such as Glow, Drop Shadow, and Marquee, superscript, subscript, and teletype, table insertion, code formatting, quote formatting, bulleted lists, ordered lists, and horizontal rule.  Finally, there are a few off-site media linking tools for YouTube Videos, YouTube Search results, YouTube User links, Instagram images, and gallery items.

For the most part these tools work the same as the basic text formatting.  In the case of URL or off-site media linking, simply enter the URL of the item you wish to link, select it, and then click the appropriate button to insert the correct BBCODE.

Attachments and Options

Attachments are files that you wish to include in your post, usually images.  To include an attachment, first expand the "Attachments and other options" menu:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

You will now see a list of options as well as the attach form.  This menu contains the option post options such as notify settings, whether or not to use the automatic smileys, etc.

Club Members can attach nay number of items to their post, and they will be displayed at the bottom of the post automatically.  To add more than one attachment, click the "more attachments" link and select another file.

You can also choose to display your attachments in a specific order within your post.  First select your attachment as normal, then click the "Insert Attachment" link beside the box.  This will insert the code necessary to display the image in your post automatically.  It will looks similar to "[attach  id=X]" where X is the number of that attachment in your post.
